Prison and Justice Committee

The mission of the Committee on Prison Ministry is to empower and equip the communion of saints in the ministry of reconciliation, restorative justice, and spiritual health for victims, inmates, officers, and families in the advancement of gospel standards of justice. We initially focused on the creation of Camp Caritas , a camp for children whose parent/parents are incarcerated. Located at Gray Center, it is going into its fourth, successful year.

The committee is now looking into how we can be of help in the Hinds County correctional facilities under the supervision of Sheriff Malcolm McMillan. We are especially interested in the juveniles housed in the facilities. They have a chance to work toward and possibly succeed in getting their GED. They are also ministered to spiritually. However, their success rate in getting back on track in the community drops dramatically after they are released because most people don't pay attention to them. Mentoring can be an extremely important and effective way to help these young people find their way to useful lives. We want very much to involve the churches and the community because we don't want them to continue going back to jail.
